Abstract

Expressive speech acts is branch of linguistic that usually find in real life, one of them is usually found in speech. The object of this research is a speech delivered by one of the famous inspirational journalists from Indonesia, namely Najwa Shihab. This study focused on the search for expressive illocutionary act types and the illocutionary function contained in the speech. In analyzing these problems, the researcher used Searle's speech act theory to analyze expressive illocutionary acts and Leech's theory to analyze the function of an illocutionary act in the speech. This study used qualitative methods, which emphasize a deeper understanding of a problem. The researcher used documentation techniques as a data collection technique because the data source of this research is taken from the video. The data analysis technique used in this study was proposed by Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, then data verification and conclusion. From the analysis of research, it is concluded that there are three expressions of thanking, two expressions of greeting, four expressions of wishing, three expressions of praising, six expressions of lamenting, thirteen expression of criticizing and fourteen expressions of arguing. As for the illocutionary function in the program, the researcher found eighteen convivial functions, and twenty-seven expressions of competitive. Meanwhile, the conflictive and collaborative function is not found by the researcher in the program. In this result, it shows that arguing speech and competitive function are mostly found in the speech.
