Abstract

ENGLISH : This research focuses on finding the types of stereotypes and its impact in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once by using Edward W. Said theory of Orientalism. Stereotypes is a thought, view, or perception of person or group toward an individual or community based on race, nationality, and sexual orientation. From this explanation the researcher present two problems related to stereotypes in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once; (1) What stereotypes are there in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once? and (2) How is the impact of stereotypes on the Asian characters in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once? The purpose of this research is to analyze stereotypes in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once and to analyze the impact of stereotypes on the Asian characters in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Furthermore, this research uses a descriptive qualitative research method. According to Creswell, qualitative research is a research process to understand human social problems, based on data sources, such as complex and holistic texts and images. This method is used to analyze data from a visual and textual point of view because the two elements can be presented through both of them. The final result of this research found the representation of the types of stereotypes and its impact on Asian characters in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once. These types of stereotypes are presented in the form of narrative structures, such as plots, characters, setting, and etc. These types of stereotypes can also have an impact on Asian characters in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once. For instance, gender stereotype is portrayed on Waymond’s character. Waymond is stereotyped as Asian man who is feminine and looks like a nerd. The researcher also found that these types of stereotypes are related to each other to produce an impact on Asian characters. INDONESIA : Penelitian ini berfokus untuk menemukan jenis-jenis stereotipe dan dampaknya dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once dengan menggunakan teori Orientalism Edward W. Said. Sederhananya, stereotipe adalah sebuah pemikiran, pandangan, atau persepsi seseorang atau kelompok terhadap sebuah individu maupun kelompok sosial atau budaya berdasarkan ras, kebangsaan, dan orientasi seksual. Dari pemaparan tersebut peneliti menyajikan dua masalah terkait stereotipe dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once; (1) Stereotipe apa saja yang ada dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once? dan (2) Bagaimana dampak stereotipe terhadap tokoh asia dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once? Adapula tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk menganalis jenis-jenis stereotipe dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once serta menganlisis dampak stereotipe pada tokoh Asia dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Selanjutnya, penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Menurut Creswell penelitian kualitatif adalah proses penelitian untuk memahami masalah sosial manusia, berdasarkan sumber data, seperti teks dan gambar yang kompleks dan holistik. Metode ini digunakan untuk menganalisis data dari sudut pandang visual dan tekstual karena kedua elemen tersebut dapat direpresentasikan melalui keduanya. Hasil akhir dari penelitian ini ditemukan representasi dari jenis-jenis stereotipe dan dampaknya terhadap tokoh Asia dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Jenis-jenis stereotipe tersebut disajikan dalam bentuk struktur naratif, seperti plot, karakter, setting, dan lain-lain. Jenis-jenis tersebut juga dapat berdampak pada tokoh Asia dalam film Everything Everywhere All at Once, misalnya stereotipe gender ditujukan pada tokoh Waymond. Waymond distereotipekan sebagai laki-laki Asia yang feminim dan berpenampilan culun. Peneliti juga menemukan bahwa jenis-jenis stereotypes ini terkait antara satu sama lain untuk menghasilkan dampak pada tokoh-tokoh Asia.
