Abstract

This research investigates the students’ reading interest in the Extensive Reading subject and how they perceive the impacts of Extensive Reading subjects on their reading interest. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. There are 36 students chosen from one class in the English Education Department of the fourth-semester class of 2021 participated in this research. The questionnaire was used to gather data on students’ reading interest in the Extensive Reading subject. In contrast, the interview was used to gain information on the student’s perception of the impact of the Extensive Reading subject on their reading interest. The result shows that the response from most item in the questionnaire is, on average, 3, which means the students have a positive response to the questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire result, the students have good reading interest in the Extensive Reading subject. It indicates that the result of the questionnaire is positive. In contrast, the interview result shows that extensive reading has a different impact on the students’ reading interests. They perceive different impacts and experiences in the extensive reading subject. In conclusion, most students are highly interested in the extensive reading subject seen from their answers to the reading interest questionnaire. Then, the students have different perceptions of the impacts of the Extensive Reading subject on their reading interest. They have different favorite reading materials, experiences, and points of view on extensive reading. Overall the students perceive the positive impact of Extensive Reading subjects on their reading interest.
