Abstract
Illocutionary acts are crucial to daily life as they play a fundamental role in human communication and interaction. An illocutionary act refers to the intended communicative function behind a speaker's utterance. The research aimed to find out the types and functions of illocutionary acts used in Joe Biden's Democracy Speeches entitled President Full 2022 and President Biden's Remarks on Protecting Democracy Voter Intimidation, employing Searle's theory. The qualitative descriptive method was applied for the investigation. The findings concluded that all five of Searle's illocutionary acts were present in the speeches. A total of 40 Assertives, 20 Directives, 17 Expressives, 1 Commisive, and 2 Declaratives were identified. Meanwhile, the function of illocutionary found in Joe Biden's utterance were functions of assertive (there are 5 functions: 19 asserting, 2 claiming, 5 informing, 6 stating and 8 reminding), functions of directive (there are 4 functions: 11 advising, 3 commanding, 4 urging, 2 requesting), function of commisive (there is a function: 1 promising), functions of expressive (there are 4 functions : 3 thanking, 2 blaming, 5 praising, 3 deplore), a function of declarative (there is a function: 1 declaring status). The research concluded that the most prevalent type of illocutionary acts found in Joe Biden's Democracy Speeches was assertive illocutionary acts, comprising 40 data. The use of assertive speech acts in both speeches allowed Joe Biden to project strength and determination, emphasizing his dedication to safeguarding democracy and countering voter intimidation. This approach was intended to instill confidence in the audience and inspire them to take action in support of democratic principles.
