Abstract

This study deals with analysis of textbook for the 7th year students of junior high school entitled “Can Do” by Michael Downie, David Gray, and Juan Manuel Jimenez based on the latest curriculum, namely the Merdeka curriculum. This book was utilized at a school in Bandung and it was not published by Indonesian Government. The purpose of this study was to identify the material presented in the textbook as compatible for grade 7 junior high school, whether the foreign-printed books are in line with the learning outcome (Capaian Pembelajaran) of Merdeka Curriculum or not. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis design. The data collection for this study was gathered from the English textbook “Can Do” published in Indonesia by PT. Asta Ilmu Sukses. The textbook analysis in this study considered seven criteria from Cunningsworth (1995), namely; (1) aims and approach; (2) Design and organization; (3) Language content; (4) Skills; (5) Topics; (6) Methodology; and (7) Practical concern. The result of the research shows that the textbook achieved average score 88.6% out of three proposed criteria. The textbook fulfils score of aims and approach (100%), design and organization (91.6%), language content (92.8%), Skill (100%), Topic (92.8%), Methodology (83.3%) and practical consideration (60%). Furthermore, the material in this book corresponds to the learning goals of the Merdeka curriculum since there are narrative, descriptive, process, brief message, and advertisement texts that grade 7 students should understand. To conclude, the textbook fulfilled all criteria from Cunningsworth (1995) and in line with the learning outcome of Merdeka Curriculum. Based on the content analysis, the textbook was classified as being of good quality and suitable to be used in 7th grade junior high school.
