Abstract

Absurd can be a formula and an essential element in a comedy film since it involves unexpected or irrational states that go against our typical perception of reality, which can create humour. According to the absurdism theory, which contends that life has no purpose, Mr. Bean movie series also contains certain absurdist fiction characteristics, particularly in the episode Mr. Bean Movie Series Episodes 1,2,3,4 and 5. This study aims to analyse what characteristics of absurdist fiction occur in Mr. Bean Movie Series Episodes 1,2,3,4 and 5. Also, how those characteristic elements of absurdist fiction create comedy in Mr. Bean Movie Series Episodes 1,2,3,4 and 5. This study's data were analysed using the theory characteristics of absurdist fiction by Pascual (2021), also supported by the theory of film comedy from Geoff King (2002) and other related theories. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The result found that there are only four types of characteristics of absurdist fiction that occur in Mr. Bean Movie series episodes 1,2,3,4, and 5. This study also found that only three elements of absurdist fiction characteristics can create comedy. This study did not find purposeless characteristics in Mr. Bean Movie series episodes 1,2,3,4, and 5. The result also shows that little or no judgment of characters or actions characteristic of absurdist fiction cannot create comedy. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Mr. Bean movie series has characteristics of absurd fiction, and some of those characteristics can create comedy.
