Abstract

Language used in society has several variants, including language style. In various contexts, individuals may adopt different speaking styles, such as formal discourse in corporate settings, informal communication with friends, or intimate conversations with their spouse or family. The present study examines the various language styles and functions employed in three travel features, published on the CNN News Website. This study aimed to find out the types of language style and analyzing the functions of language used in the selected CNN Features: Travel Category. This study examined language style uses Joos (1967)'s theory and language functions uses Holmes (2001)'s theory. A qualitative description method is used for this study. Words, phrases, and sentences from CNN's feature were the main data source for this research. Based on the analysis of the data found, there are 131 data which show 3 types of language style and 6 functions of language. For language style, there are Formal Style (57), Consultative Style (16), and Casual Style (58). Meanwhile there are 11 Expressive Function, 13 Directive Function, 71 Referential Function, 19 Metalinguistic function, 3 Poetic Function, and 14 Phatic Function. It can be concluded that the primary focus of the three travel feature titles used in this study is to provide readers with information in a semi-formal setting.
