Abstract

Speech act is one of pragmatic theory when someone influencing others to do an act with words. Kamala Harris as the first women vice president successfully make a history with her influence to the citizen. Based on the background problem, can be formulated that the research focuses on finding the types of illocutionary act and the purpose of illocutionary act used in the utterance of Kamala Harris in her speech “The Elected Vice President”. In analyzing the research of data, the researcher uses the theory of types of illocutionary speech act by Yule (1996) and the purposes of illocutionary speech act by Searle (1976). The method of analysis used in this research is qualitative descriptive method. The data are taken from the utterance of Kamala Harris that change into transcript. In findings, the researcher found there are four types of illocutionary act used. There are representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives. The second analysis is about the purpose of each type of illocutionary act used. There are 10 types for representative act (remind, tell, assert, correct, state, describe, inform, claim, beliefs, conclude), 2 types for directives act (requesting, command), 1 type for commissive act (promising), and 1 type for expressive (thanking). The declarative does not used in Kamala Harris utterance because there was no such usage found in the data. The most used type is the representative act because she delivering a lot of statement, fact, and opinion which including to representative act.
