Abstract

Maxim requires observation or obedience to be followed by the speaker and the listener, and both may violate, flout, or opt-out. These three are called Non- Observance maxims. The purposes of this research are: (1) To find out what kind of non-observance maxims in the dialogue of Tere Liye’s Sun. (2) To identify the purposes of the non-observance maxim in the dialogue of Tere Liye’s Sun. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from each chapter of the “Sun” novel in the form of dialogue among the characters. The theory of the cooperative principles and the non-observance maxim by Grice (1975) is used as the theory of this research. The results of this research showed that there were at least 33 dialogues that indicate the non-observance maxim; they are flouts the maxim of quantity (12 data), maxim of relation (four data), maxim of manner (two data), violation maxim of quantity (three data) maxim of quality (three data), maxim of relation (eight data), opt-out the maxim of quantity (five data), maxim of quality (one data), maxim relation (one data). The result shows flouting and violating the maxim is the most occur in the dialogue of the non-observance maxim and the purpose of the non-observance maxim is clarifying information, hiding the intention, mocking, and exaggeration.
