Abstract

ENGLISH : The development of the character's personality in the film is important because it will cause development in the story. Similarly, the characterization image of the character can also be closely related to psychological aspects. This can cause internal or external conflicts or even changes and self-developments in the character that become the continuity of the plot in the film. This study focused on analyzing the main character's development in the film A Beautiful Mind caused by conflicts during the story. The purposes of this study was to find the characterization of the main character in the film A Beautiful Mind and the personality development of the main character in the film A Beautiful Mind. Then, this research was conducted by employing qualitative descriptive methods and used Petrie & Boggs's theory related to the characterization of the main character. In addition, for supporting theories, the researcher uses Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory related to personality development in the main character in the film. The results of the analysis of this study were the finding of 41 data in the form of scene quotes in characterization that revealed how characterization and conflicts occurred in the main character in this story, namely 13 scenes for characterization through dialogue, 11 scenes through external action, 7 scenes through internal action, 10 scenes through other characters reactions. There were also 23 pieces of data in the form of scene quotes to explain how personality development in the main character, namely 5 scenes from repression, 3 scenes from sublimation, 3 scenes from displacement, 4 scenes from rationalization, 1 scene from projection, 1 scene from formation reaction, and 6 scenes from fantasy. This proves that every development of the main character that occurs in the film A Beautiful Mind is caused by the conflicts behind it. Hence, it can be concluded that conflict is the main trigger in character development, especially in the main character, because the character will always tend to develop when entering the film story, especially if there is a conflict he faces. INDONESIA : Perkembangan kepribadian karakter didalam film menjadi hal yang penting, karena akan menyebabkan perkembangan terhadap cerita. Demikian pula, gambaran karakterisasi pada karakter juga bisa berkaitan erat dengan aspek psikologis. Hal ini dapat menimbulkan konflik internal atau eksternal atau bahkan perubahan dan pengembangan diri pada karakter yang menjadi keberlanjutan alur cerita dalam film. Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis perkembangan tokoh utama dalam film A Beautiful Mind yang disebabkan oleh adanya konflik-konflik selama cerita berlangsung. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan penokohan tokoh utama dalam film A Beautiful Mind dan perkembangan kepribadian tokoh utama dalam film A Beautiful Mind. Kemudian, penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan menggunakan teori Petrie & Boggs terkait karakterisasi pada tokoh, Selain itu, untuk mendukung teori, peneliti menggunakan teori psikoanalisis Sigmund Freud terkait dengan pengembangan kepribadian pada tokoh utama dalam film. Hasil analisis dari penelitian ini adalah ditemukannya 41 data berupa kutipan adegan pada karakterisasi yang mengungkapkan bagaimana karakterisasi dan konflik-konflik yang terjadi pada tokoh utama didalam cerita ini, yaitu 13 adegan untuk karakterisasi melalui dialog, 11 adegan melalui aksi eksternal, 7 adegan melalui aksi internal, 10 adegan melalui reaksi karakter lain. Ada juga 23 buah data berupa kutipan adegan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana perkembangan kepribadian pada tokoh utama, yaitu 5 adegan dari represi, 3 adegan dari sublimasi, 3 adegan dari pengalihan, 4 adegan dari rasionalisasi, 1 adegan dari proyeksi, 1 adegan dari reaksi formasi, dan 6 adegan dari fantasi. Hal tersebut membuktikan bahwa setiap perkembangan tokoh utama yang terjadi dalam film A Beautiful Mind disebabkan oleh adanya konflik-konflik yang melatarbelakanginya. Maka dari itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa konflik menjadi pemicu utama dalam perkembangan karakter terutama pada karakter tokoh utama, karena karakter akan cenderung selalu berkembang ketika memasuki cerita film, terlebih jika adanya konflik yang dihadapinya.
