Abstract
Sound change is the changing of the language pattern including the meaning in a certain time and environment. Usually it changes to the simple one of pronunciation when people utter the sound. It is happened when the seventh semester students of English Literature in UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung pronounced the English diphthongs on their YouTube channel. There are two aims of this research to find out: The first is to find out the various kinds of sound changing that occurred in the pronunciation of English diphthongs were pronounced by seventh semester Sundanese students of English Literature on their YouTube channel; the second is to find out the processes that occurred in the pronunciation of English diphthongs pronounced by English Literature student on their YouTube channel. This research used descriptive qualitative method because it analyzes data descriptively based on the phonological system and theory. This research also applied two main theories; Roach’s theory and Campbell’s theory for finding and discussing the sound changes in this research. Based on the findings, the researcher concludes: a) there are seven English diphthongs are difficult to pronounce by the students . The diphthongs are [əʊ], [ɪə], [eɪ], [eə], [aɪ], [aʊ], and [ʊə] and there are three sound changes happened that include monophthongization, deletion, and error pronunciation of English, b) the sound changes happened from [əʊ] to [ɔː] and [ʊ], [ɪə] to [i:] and [ʊ], [eɪ] to [e] and [ʌ], [eə] to [e] and [ʌ], [aɪ] to [ɪ] and [eɪ], [aʊ] to [ʊ] and [ɔː], also [ʊə] to [ʊ]. It happened caused by the phonological system of Sundanese is totally different from phonological system in English. Sundanese does not have diphthongs in its language, meanwhile English has diphthongs in its phonological system.
