Abstract

Mutual understanding between speakers and listeners is the aim of communication. Sometimes speakers do not precisely convey their message, leaving the listener to fill in the blanks. Context is essential in this process when this happens it is known as conversational implicature. Implicature causes the conversation to disobey the rules of communication which are referred to as non-observance maxims. Thus, this study aims to identify the types of conversational implicature; generalized implicature and particularized implicature and to reveal the non-observance maxims occurred in the sitcom of Family Guy season 4. The data of this study was analyzed using the theory of conversational implicature by Herbert Paul Grice (1975) which was supported by the theory from Yule (1996). The method used in this study is qualitative research and conversation analysis. There were 105 data found in this study yet ended up 98 data were included. The first result of the types of conversational implicature revealed 17 data of generalized implicature and 20 data of particularized implicature. The non-observance maxims revealed 3 data of flouted maxim of quality, 7 data of flouted maxim of quantity, 1 datum of flouted maxim of relation, 16 data of flouted maxim of manner, 10 data of violated maxim of quality, 2 data of violated maxim of quantity, 12 data of violated maxim of relation, 1 datum of violated of manner, 1 datum of opted out maxim of quality, 2 data of opted out maxim of quantity, 3 data of opted out maxim of relation, and 3 data of opted out maxim of manner. The result showed that particularized implicature is the most frequent data found for the types of conversational implicature, and flouted maxim of manner is the second most frequent data found for non-observance maxim. The reasons of why speakers use particularized implicature which causes disobeying the maxims would be great to study by future researcher, using the same theory by Herbert Paul Grice (1975).
