Abstract

This research examines the social criticism contained in the research movie The Greatest Showman (2017), where the focus of this research is how to analyze the message of social criticism in the film. In this research, the researcher pose two research questions. The first is about the types of social criticism that exist in films. The second is about social criticism effect The Greatest Showman film. In this research, the researcher uses the theory of Karl Marx. Social criticism is a means of communication that functions as a control over the course of a social system and social process. In this research, researcher used qualitative methods. Based on the data analysis, it is concluded that the researcher obtained total 42 data on social criticism in The Greatest Showman film conversation, and among the 42 data, the researcher concluded that in The Greatest Showman movie conversation there were various social criticisms. Social criticism about cultural problem (1 data), moral problem (25 data), economic problem (7 data), and family problem (4 data). And the researcher also obtained total 5 data on social criticism effect characterization in The Greatest Showman movie. Penelitian ini meneliti kritik sosial yang terdapat pada film The Greatest Showman (2017), dimana fokus penelitian ini adalah bagaimana menganalisis pesan kritik sosial yang ada pada film. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis mengajukan dua pertanyaan penelitian. Pertama adalah tentang jenis – jenis kritik sosial yang ada pada film. Kedua adalah tentang gambaran umum kritik sosial yang ada pada film The Greatest Showman. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan teori dari Karl Marx. Kritik sosial merupakan sarana komunikasi yang berfungsi sebagai control terhadap jalannya suatu sistem sosial dan proses sosial. Pada penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif. Berdasarkan analisis data, disimpulkan bahwa peneliti memperoleh total 42 data tentang kritik sosial dalam percakapan film The Greatest Showman, dan di antara 42 data tersebut, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa dalam percakapan film The Greatest Showman terdapat berbagai kritik sosial. Kritik sosial tentang masalah budaya (1 data), masalah moral (25 data), masalah ekonomi (7 data), masalah keluarga (4 data). Dan peneliti juga memperoleh total 5 data tentang gambaran bagaimana kritik sosial berpengaruh terhadap perubahan karakter dalam film The Greatest Showman.
