Abstract

This study was intended to determine students' ability to write descriptive text using inquiry-based learning methods. The aims of this research are: (1) to find out students' ability to write descriptive text using the inquiry-based learning method, (2) to find out students' ability to write descriptive text without an inquiry-based learning method, (3) to determine the effectiveness of inquiry-based learning on students' ability to write a descriptive text. This study uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental approach. The participants of this research were two class VII students of MTs Negeri 4 Bogor. Class 7A was the experimental class, totalling 31 people, and 7B was the control class, totalling 31 people. The result showed that the experimental class's statistical analysis of pre-test and post-test scores significantly increased. The average of the students on the pre-test was 53.23, while the average on the post-test was 79.68. Meanwhile, Statistical analysis of pre-test and post-test scores showed a significant increase in the control class. The students' average on the pre-test was 51.94, while the average on the post-test was 69.03. Furthermore, Statistical calculations from post-test scores show that inquiry-based learning effectively increases students' ability to write descriptive text. The results of paired sample T-test evidence this was 0.000 less than 0.05. Furthermore, in the N-Gain analysis, the gain score was 0.59. It signifies that the score higher than 0.59 (0.59> 0.3), based on the category, the interpretation is average. To conclude, the inquiry-based learning method in this study affects students' writing skills. This can be seen from the increase in their writing scores in the post-test. The inquiry-based learning method can be implemented to improve students' ability to write descriptive text in class VII MTs Negeri 4 Bogor. It is proven that there is a significant increase in students' descriptive text writing skills.
