Abstract

The existence of local rice is threatened due to loss of habitat due to land conversion, natural disasters and the shift of farmers to commercial rice. Exploration and characterization are the first steps in efforts to preserve local rice in Garut Regency. This study aimed to explore and characterize local highland rice in Garut regency. The research was conducted from March to June 2023 with three stages, namely exploration, characterization and analysis of genetic distances. The research method used in exploration was survey method, then characterization was carried out using experimental and descriptive methods and genetic distance analysis using descriptive methods. Cluster analysis based on dendograms used NTSYS version 2.2 software, by analyzing some of the local rice characters. The results showed that 11 local rice accessions were found in specific locations in five different districts. The eleven accessions had different appearances based on quantitative characters (QN), namely leaf blade length, panicle length, flowering age and number of tillers except for leaf blade width, as well as differing qualitative characters (QL), namely leaf anthocyanin color, stem behavior, panicle behavior to stem, flag leaf behavior and panicle branch behavior show various characters. There are four clusters resulting from the genetic analysis.
