Abstract
Communication is a powerful tool used by humans to persuade others, gain agreement for their ideas and capture the attention of their audience. To achieve good communication, individuals must follow the rules and principles of cooperative principles in pragmatics. However, there are times when speakers flout these principles, which can be referred to as flouting maxim. In this study, the characters in the movie The Dirty Dozen are analyzed, highlighting moments when they unknowingly flout maxim in their persuasive language to influence their interlocutors' behavior. Flouting maxim can be used as an effective strategy for persuasion, which is explored in this research using qualitative descriptive methods and movie scripts. The study draws from theories of pragmatics by George Yule (1996), cooperative principles by H. Paul Grice (1975), persuasive language by H.W. Simons (2001), and rhetoric by Aristotle (2008). The research identifies 41 instances where flouting maxim is used as a persuasion strategy, employing principles, techniques, and tactics of power to support this approach. This study suggests that The Dirty Dozen movie also uses flouting maxim to persuade their interlocutors and achieve their objectives.
