Abstract

ENGLISH : Interaction requires an understanding between the two parties both in terms of the meaning and purpose of the conversation. However, in practice there are several causes that interfere with a person's language skills so that the meaning and purpose of the conversation is not conveyed, such as a stroke. Therefore, the research problems derived from this phenomenon are (1) What are the linguistic symptoms experienced by stroke patients in the film My Beautiful Broken Brain? (2) What types of disorders experienced by stroke patients in the film My Beautiful Broken Brain?. The theory used in this study is from Manasco (2020) regarding aphasia symptoms and Shipley & McAfee (2019) concerning assessment of the type of aphasia. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method with content analysis to analyze the data in this study. From the results of the data analysis, Lotje Sodderland as a stroke sufferer has several symptoms such as Anomia in Broca's Aphasia, Anomia in Anomic Aphasia, Agrammatism, Verbal Comprehension Deficit, Repetition Deficit, Perseveration, Phonemic Paraphasia, Neological Paraphasia, Semantic Paraphasia, Unrelated Verbal Paraphasia, Pure Alexia, Central Alexia, Agrafia, and Apraxia. In addition, based on the symptoms found and the results of the aphasia type assessment table, it was found that the type of aphasia that Lotje Sodderland suffered from was Broca's aphasia. Based on all the findings obtained from this study, it can be concluded that Lotje Sodderland with a language disorder acquired from a stroke experienced a significant decrease in language skills such as naming difficulties, repetition, choosing words, to writing and reading. Then from the symptoms, it shows indications of aphasia symptoms which refer to Broca's aphasia. This study has suggestion for future researchers to broaden and deepen other psycholinguistic materials in the realm of language disorders or even other materials.
