Abstract

This research aims to investigate the teacher’s challenges and strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The research was aimed 1) to identify the challenges that the teacher faces during teaching reading comprehension of news item text, 2) to describe the strategies does the teacher use to cope with the challenges that she faces during teaching comprehension of news item text. The researcher conducted a qualitative research with a case study approach. The participant in this research was an English teacher who teaches reading comprehension of news item text in an Islamic Senior High School in Tanjungsari, Sumedang. Observation sheets and interviews used to analyze the challenges that the teacher faces during teaching reading comprehension of news item text and teaching strategies used by an English teacher in the material reading comprehension of news item text. The result of this research showed that four challenges faced by teacher in teaching reading comprehension of news item text, namely students' lack of understanding and mastery of the meaning of vocabulary, lazy to read long text, differences in the level of understanding of each student, and lack of interest in students to want to know and want to try to understand a reading text. This research also obtained strategies does the teacher uses to cope with the challenges that she faces during teaching comprehension of news item text, namely preparing material from the textbook; providing vocabulary and its meaning related to news item texts, then memorizing them; providing news item texts that are currently being discussed in the media; peer teaching in groups; reading texts and translating them; retelling the contents of the text given in front of class and finally using electronic media in the learning process.
