Abstract

Lexical ambiguity is a phenomenon of ambiguity caused by the word. The occurrence of lexical ambiguity is happened when a word has more than a meaning, and lexical ambiguity has 2 types namely polysemy and homonymy. This research is interested in analyzing types of ambiguity found in BBC News Online Headlines and the interpretations of ambiguity by using the assistance of WordNet. This research uses descriptive-qualitative method. Meanwhile the data are taken from the headlines of BBC News Online, which focuses on ambiguous word. Therefore, the writer conducting this research on this topic first by categorizing the types of ambiguity found in the BBC News Online Headlines with the assistance of WordNet. Furthermore, the second is interpreting the ambiguous word also with the assistance of WordNet. Based on data analysis, this research found 13 data of polysemy types of lexical ambiguity and 17 data of homonymy types of lexical ambiguity. From these findings, it can be concluded that ambiguity can occur in any kind of situations either spoken or written as in the headline of the news, because a word that is ambiguous could lead to multiple interpretation and the intention is not conveyed properly.
