Abstract

Writing is a way to produce language. Writing is an important skill that should be mastered by students who should use language correctly. Writing can help students to improve other skills unconsciously. There are some problems faced by students in writing skills. The students consider writing as a difficult task to do because they cannot easily arrange sentences and make a storyline. Their writing would show a lot of mistakes in terms of grammar and others. Dealing with the problems, this research proposed “Silent Webcomic” as a media to solve their writing difficulties. This research considers that it is necessary to find out an alternative way to make students discover ideas, to help the easier ways of using appropriate words to accompany their ideas and to make them understand in grammar and punctuation. The research instrument used in this research was writing test. The data used was narrative texts. This research aims to: 1) What is the students’ ability in learning writing before using Silent webcomic? 2) What is the students’ ability in learning writing after using Silent webcomic? 3) How significant is the use of Silent webcomic to improve students’ writing ability in the classroom? This research was aimed to find students ability at the first grade students of MA Sekolah Cinta Ilmu, Baleendah, Bandung in writing narrative text by using silent webcomic. This research was pre-experimental quantitative research. This research was implemented in five meetings. The researcher collected data by pre-test, three treatments, and post-test. The number of sample was 14 students. Students’ scores in the tests were analysed statistically in the following steps; determining the normality of data, examining the homogeneity of two variances, and testing the hypothesis. The obtained data was gathered through tests (pre-test and post-test). The results of study show that 1). the students’ ability in learning writing before using Silent webcomic is on the average score of pre-test is 44,21; 2). the students’ ability in learning writing after teaching narrative text writing thought silent webcomic is on the average socre of post-test. 66,14. 3). there is significant improvement between before and after the use of silent webcomic. Moreover, the t-test calculation result shows that the tcount is 2,16 and the ttable is -5,27. It means that the tcount is higher than the ttable. In other words, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In conclusion, the teaching of writing narrative text using silent comic can develop students’ writing ability mastery. The suggestions are: silent webcomic as instructional media can be implemented in teaching writing narrative in the classroom; silent webcomic makes teaching and learning activity become effective and fun.
