Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the adventure formula in Ruben Fleischer's Uncharted (2022) movie. The objectives of this research are to (1) describe how the adventure formula is depicted in the Uncharted (2022) movie, and (2) analyze the character of Nathan Drake in support the adventure. The researcher used Joyce G. Saricks' adventure formula theory and descriptive qualitative method with structural analysis approach. The results showed that there are 6 adventure formulas in the Uncharted (2022) movie: (1) Characterization formula with the main character Nathan Drake as the hero, Victor Sullivan, Chloe Frazer, Santiago Moncada, and Jo Braddock as supporting characters and villains. (2) Storyline formula that describes the journey of the hero and his partner in the treasure hunting. (3) Pacing formula which shows a fast-paced pacing that features the main character constantly facing dangerous challenges. (4) Frame/setting formula that takes place in exotic and historical locations. (5) Tone/mood formula that varies from tension to humour. (6) Style/language formula that ranges from poetic to language that evokes the spirit of adventure. Nathan Drake’s role as a hero is a key element in support the adventure storyline, in accordance with Saricks' concept of adventure heroes operating under a strong moral code. For Nathan, his moral code is hisdeeply desire to reunite with his brother, which is what initiates his adventure and depicts the adventure formula in the Uncharted (2022) movie.
