Abstract

Code switching is the practice of changing languages from one language to another within a conversation. For some people, code switching is used to showcase intellect and appear stylish. Therefore, the researcher feels interested and necessary to conduct the research about code switching and the aims are to analyze the types and reasons for using the code switching used by Max on Max D. Capo's YouTube channel. The analysis of the type of code switching and the reasons for its use was wered carried out using a qualitative descriptive method, and the main theory used was from Hoffmann (1991). Based on the analysis, it was found that the types of code switching used were Intrasentential Code Switching (33 data), Establishing Continuity (10 data), Emblematic Switching (9 data), and Intersentential Code Switching (4 data). As for the reasons behind code switching usage, they include (baut parallel) Quoting Somebody Else (18 data), Being Empathetic About Something (13 data), Talking About A Particular Topic (11 data), Interjection (8 data), Expressing Group Identity (2 data), Repetition Used for Clarification (2 data), and Intention of Clarifying The Speech Content For Interlocutor (2 data). From the data findings, it was observed that Max predominantly employs Intrasentential Code Switching, and the most frequent reason for code switching usage is Quoting Somebody Else. Therefore, it can be concluded that Max, as a bilingual English-Japanese individual, employed all types of code switching along with all the reasons, yet the most commonly utilized reason by Max on the YouTube channel Max D. Capo was Quoting Somebody Else.
