Abstract
Writing skill is an important aspect in learning and teaching English. The primary part of a writing is the paragraph. In order to make a good paper, functional grammar is needed for improving writing. Aguirre-Muñoz, Chang, and Sanders (2015) state teaching functional grammar has an impact on writing quality. Therefore, this research aims to examine the correlation between students’ systemic functional grammar mastery and their paragraph writing This research used a quantitative methodology, specifically using a correlation design. This research has a sample size of 60 third-semester students from the English Education Department at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung during the academic year 2022-2023. To gather the data required, this study used document analysis to examine students’ final test scores in the Introduction to Systemic Functional Grammar and Paragraph Writing course, as provided by the lecturer. Moreover, the data analyzed by Pearson correlation coefficient in SPSS 29. The findings showed a significant correlation between students’ mastery of SFG and paragraph writing. With a sample size of 60, it is used to compare the correlation coefficient (r-count) with the r-table at a significance level of 0.05. Obtained from the results, the correlation coefficient score was 0.341, exceeding the minimum value (r-table) of 0.25. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis is accepted, and the null hypothesis is automatically rejected. In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between the students’ systemic functional grammar mastery variables and their paragraph writing.
