Abstract

In order to encourage effective communication and ensure the right reception of information, it is essential that individuals possess a common comprehension during the course of a conversation. Fail to execute the task in a proper manner may lead to diverse implications among the interlocutors. In general, people tend to follow the established maxim norms while they are in a discussion, but regrettably not all interactions can since occasionally there is misunderstanding or ambiguity between the speaker and the listener. This research focuses on implicature as a result of flouting maxims that occurs in the Shelby family's conversations in Season 5 of the Peaky Blinders series. This study comprises three inquiries. The first aims to delineate the types of conversational implicature, while the second focuses on identifying the varieties of flouting maxim, and the final inquiry pertains to discerning the contributing factors inherent in conversational implicature. The data is gathered from the setting of every episode and then passes qualitative analysis using a suitable data analysis approach as outlined by Creswell (1998) defines qualitative research as an investigation into and comprehension of the significance. The data were then classified according to the type proposed by Grice (1989) defines implicature as the implicit purpose that derives from speakers delivery of utterance. which is also supported by the theory proposed by Levinson (1983) pragmatics is the study of the relationship between language and context which is set in grammar. The results of this study found that there were 49 data. 40 were found in flouting maxim and each data was divided into 4 types, namely flouting maxim of quantity (9 data), flouting maxim of quantity (7 data), flouting maxim of manner (7 data) and flouting maxim of relation (17 data). Then, two factors emerge in this study: the strategies employed in each form of flouting maxim and the motivation that emerges and causes flouting maxim to occur such as competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive.
