Abstract

Social autobiographical novels are often written by authors based on their personal experiences and histories. This includes the autobiographical novel "Anne Frank," which narrates the social injustices that occurred at that time. Social injustice itself is an arbitrary action that benefits one party in a conflict in the interests of a specific group. This research is related to this topic because it aims to understand social injustice within the literary work "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank in 1947 by identifying the types of social injustice experienced by the characters in the novel. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with reference to the social injustice theory developed by Dogra (2014) using a structuralism approach. The research findings reveal four identified types of social injustices: 6 cases of unequal wealth distribution, 11 cases of caste differences, 18 cases of racial discrimination, and 15 cases of child labor. Out of all the types of cases, racial discrimination is the dominant type that occurs most frequently. From the results of this research, there are evident effects and consequences of social injustice, including poverty and human rights violations, each of which has 5 cases. The work depicts a continuous cycle of social injustice without resistance due to conditions that render the victims unable to combat the oppression they experience. Through this novel, an important moral message is conveyed to society, emphasizing the importance of living in justice as a consequence of past discrimination, prejudice, and intolerance, serving as a valuable lesson for the future.
