Abstract

Slang is a type of linguistic variety that is regularly used by a group of people in a casual situation. Slang, in general, refers to distinctive words or phrases used in casual conversations by a certain group of people. Understanding slang is important in communication, people communicate with one another in all situations in order to accomplish their goals. One should be ready to adjust throughout a conversation to the context since language is constantly changing and evolving. Therefore, this research employed slang words to analyze. This study aimed at finding out the slang types and functions of Kurtis Conner’s utterance in his podcast. The object of the research was several of podcast episode by Kurtis Conner in his Very Really Good YouTube channel. This research used qualitative descriptive method. More thorough data collecting and analysis were made possible by qualitative research. This research used the theory of slang by Allan and Burridge (2006). The result showed there were slang words consisting of Fresh and Creative (21 words), Flippant (14 words), Imitative (9 words), Clipping (7 words), and Acronym (3 words), which were 54 slang words in total. Then the functions, were to initiate relax conversation (14 words), to express impression (11 words), to show intimacy (11 words), to form intimate atmosphere (7 words), to humiliate (6 words), to address (4 words), and lastly, to reveal anger (1 word). The functions of the slang words were also 54 words in total. In conclusion, the most type and function of slang words in the podcast was Fresh and Creative and to initiate relax conversation. It means that Kurtis Conner used slang words in his podcast in order to create a casual and laid-back connection with his listeners.
