Abstract
Language has a complex function of involving one another in large-scale use of communication delivering specific context of the topic. Code-mixing and code-switching offer broad yet comprehensive meaning elaboration towards various forms of speech, in a similarly precise way of Connie Rahakundini, a prominent Indonesian military observer, delivering code-mixing and code-switching in her remarks and numerous topics during a political interview. This research investigates types of code-mixing and code-switching and the reasons behind them in Connie Rahakundini's utterance. This research uses the method of qualitative descriptive and content analysis technique. The results of the research show that out of 47 data of code-mixing, the most frequently used code-mixing by Connie Rahakundini was insertion code-mixing, with 27 data (57,44%). Afterwards, Connie Rahakundini conducted alternation code-mixing, with 12 data (25,53%). Then, congruent lexicalization was the less frequently used code-mixing in her utterances with 8 data (17,02%). As for code-switching, 3 data of metaphorical code-switching were found. Connie Rahakundini conducted metaphorical code-switching instead of situational code-switching so there was a percentage of (100%) from metaphorical code-switching. There are two conclusions based on the result of analysis: First conlusion, there were three types of code-mixing that Connie Rahakundini used. They were insertion code-mixing, alternation code-mixing, and congruent lexicalization code-mixing. As for the code-switching, Connie Rahakundini used metaphorical code-switching. Second conclusion, there were five reasons behind Connie Rahakundini's code-mixing and code-switching included: talking about particular topic, showing solidarity: empathizing about something, interjection, intention of clarifying speech content for interlocutor, and to soften or strengthen request or command. In addition, this research contributes to providing insights into code-mixing and code-switching involving particular purposes behind them towards an understanding of language features and specific contextual topics in a particular base of communication.
