Abstract

This research is motivated by the trend of religious moderation as a necessity in Indonesia to stem religious extremism. Persatuan Islam as an organization that is well-known for its slogan of returning to the Al-Quran and Sunnah and also having a perspective and thinking that is unique to other organizations creates different attitudes and thoughts as well. Therefore, this study aims to examine the concept of religious moderation according to Persatuan Islam and its implementation. This study used a qualitative method using data collection techniques by in-depth interviews with Persatuan Islam figures and observation. In this study found three main findings. First, the response from the figure Persatuan Islam to the religious moderation program issued by the Ministry of Religion welcomed this religious moderation because it is in accordance with Islamic teachings. However, there is concern that religious moderation is used as a supporting tool and a political tool to designate groups that are not liked as immoderate because there are indicators of religious moderation which are feared to be monopolized by certain groups. Persatuan Islam considers that this indicator must be discussed together in order to get common ground from stake holders. Second, the concept of religious moderation Persatuan Islam returns all of its foundations to the Al-Quran and hadith. Against interfaith communities Persatuan Islam upholds freedom of religion, tolerance, and respect for nonMuslims. However, they still maintain the authenticity of Islamic teachings and maintain diversity only within the limits of Islamic law. Regarding intra-Islamic differences, Persatuan Islam considers them as part of the ummah that needs to be resuscitated by using a pressure dialogue approach and rejecting violence even though it does not justify its teachings and doctrines. In the realm of differences in fiqh, Persatuan Islam respects differences of opinion and recognizes diversity in ijtihad, although they may disagree with the results of ijtihad of other groups and still upholds tolerance and respects differences of opinion in the aspect of ijtihadiyyah. In local culture, Persatuan Islam does not accommodate cultures that have elements of shirk and must be Islamized. Likewise Persatuan Islam has a strong commitment to hatred because of the constitution of the state constitution and also Pancasila as the philosophy of the state. Third, in the implementation of religious moderation, Persatuan Islam. the belief that one can live side by side and also not act repressively towards other groups is included in a moderate attitude. At the level of preachers Persatuan Islam provides three guidelines that must be implemented as stated in the letter An Nahl verse 125.
