Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of Word Connect Games (WCG) application on EFL students’ improving English vocabulary. Several problems were found in learning vocabulary, such as students are less motivated to learn English, they believe that learning English is complex, and many students lack vocabulary. Moreover, this research proposes a technique to solve learning vocabulary problems by using Word Connect Games (WCG) application. This research aims to examine the EFL students’ vocabulary ability before using Word Connect Games application, to examine the EFL students’ vocabulary ability after using Word Connect Games application, and to identify the significant result EFL students’ vocabulary before and after using Word Connect Games application. This research applied quantitative method with pre-experimental design that consists of one group pre-test and post-test. The research site of this research was Smp 1 Tanggeung. The population was 8th grade of Smp 1 Tanggeung 30 in the 2023/2024 academic year. This research used purposive sampling technique with 24 students of class VIII-C as sample. The data was collected by pre-test and post-test using written tests. The data shows that the mean score of students’ vocabulary skills before using word connect games application was 53.50. In comparison, the post-test score after applying usi g word connect games application was 86.83. It means there is significant improvement by using word connect games application and the scores increased by 33.33. This was also evidenced by the paired sample T-test, as well as N-gain analysis showed 0.000 were less than 0.05. As a consequence, N-gain analysis showeds a score with a mean of 0.7455, or (0.7455 > 0.7). This mean, based on the category, the interpretation is high. It indicates Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. This sudy conclude that, the use of word connect games application affects the improvement of students' vocabulary.
