Abstract

The use of figurative language in literature captivates the attention of literature enthusiasts through elements such as metaphor, comparison, personification, symbolism, and more. Its purpose extends beyond the literal interpretation of words and focuses on conveying profound meanings and emotions. Figurative language serves as an expressive component, enriching the text with depth and artistic value, creating an engaging reading experience that stimulates critical thinking. This research aims to identify the types and functions of figurative language based on characteristic data references. The study explores how figurative language functions in literary works, specifically in the lyrics of songs by the band Panic! At the Disco. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data is analyzed through the examination of lyrics and attentive listening to songs, utilizing the discourse analysis theories of Fairclough and Flick. The research focuses on ten selected songs from the album Death of a Bachelor (2016), including Victorious, Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time, Death of a Bachelor, LA Devotee, Emperor's New Clothes, LA Devotee, Golden Days, The Good, the Bad and the Dirty, House of Memories, and Impossible Year. Data classification relies on figurative language concepts by scholars like Keraf, Mantyla, Kennedy, and Perrine. The study integrates social and cultural aspects into understanding figurative language, incorporating perspectives from Fairclough and Flick. The qualitative descriptive approach involves the analysis of lyrics and careful listening to songs, applying the theoretical framework of discourse analysis by Fairclough and Flick. The research uncovers a total of one hundred and ninety-four types of figurative language across the examined songs, with thirteen identified types including simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, hyperbole, understatement, irony, metonymy, paradox, symbol, repetition, idiom, and allegory. Idiom emerges as the most frequently used, followed by metaphor, symbol, and other types of figurative language. Further analysis identifies the functions of figurative language in conveying emotions and depicting experiences. The lyrics of Panic! At the Disco express emotions through figurative language and simple sentences referencing social or cultural life. This research contributes to the contemporary discourse on the significance of figurative language in literary works.
