Abstract

The basic pattern of conversation is A-B-A-B. A speaker shift is needed to make the conversation run smoothly so no speaker is talking at one time. Talk shows are conversational activities that present conversations as they are, without scripts, and produce natural interaction. This research aims to identify types of turn-taking strategies and exchange procedures in conversations between Stephen Colbert and Prince Harry on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Turn-taking is how to take and manage the turn in the conversation. It can be seen how the participant in the talk show is taking the floor, holding the floor, or yielding the floor. In addition, in social interaction, there is a conversation structure, namely I-R-I-R, which provides connections in each conversation topic. This study uses Stenstrom's theory of turn-taking strategies and exchange procedures (1994). This research uses descriptive qualitative methods to interpret based on the theory. In this study, it was found that all participants used all strategies in turn-taking; the strategy that often appeared in this conversation was holding the floor, especially in the use of filled pauses, verbal fillers, and lexical repetition. This is because of the topic of discussion that was written in Harry’s book that discussed his journey and his struggle as member the royal family. Therefore, they try to ask and answer questions carefully as the actual information. In addition, the structure of the conversation in general is Initiate-Response-Initiate-Response. However, in the conversation, there is the use of re-opening and follow-up, which functions to provide a reaction to the response, which can produce a continuous conversation.
