Abstract
Polysemy refers to a word having multiple meanings, with the additional meanings typically stemming from and remaining connected to its original sense. This expansion of meanings, often found in the second or third interpretations, serves to facilitate straightforward communication for language users, enabling them to convey complex ideas with a single word. The present study examines the used of polysemy in the Clint Smith’s TED Talk entitled “The Danger of Silence”. This study aimed to find out the types of polysemy and analyze the factors influencing the occurrence of polysemy in the Clint Smith’s TED Talk. This study examined the types of polysemy using Alwi (2010)’s theory and the factors influencing the occurrence of polysemy using Pateda (2001)’s theory. This research employed the qualitative descriptive method. Words, phrases, and sentences from Clint Smith’s TED Talk were the main data source for this research. Based on the analysis of the data found, there are 29 data which show 3 types of polysemy and 3 factors influencing the occurrence of polysemy. In term of types of polysemy, polysemy verbs (18 data), polysemy nouns (9 data), polysemy adjectives (2 data). Meanwhile there are lexical influences (2 data), grammatical considerations (1 data), components of language susceptible to change (18 data). It can be concluded that polysemous words in had the Clint Smith’s TED Talk had the potential to prompt varied interpretations among listeners. This variability could sometimes lead to misunderstandings of the overall meaning of the speech. The employment of such words in the script even enhances the aesthetic appeal, making them more captivating to read.
