Abstract

This study aimed to analyse and compare the similarities found in two famous short stories, namely The Lottery (1948) by Shirley Jackson and The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas (1973) by Ursula K. Le Guin. These two short stories were chosen because they have similarities in terms of themes and also explore moral and ethical aspects in society in a unique and controversial way. This research uses a objectives method approach through a comparative study of Susan Bassnett's (1993) theory to explore the characteristics of the themes that appear in the two short stories. The results of the analysis show that the two short stories have similar themes consisting of sacrifice, tradition and dystopia. The theme of sacrifice in both short stories cause readers to ponder the ethical implications of collective action and question societal values that might justify cruelty for the sake of collective happiness. Furthermore, the theme of tradition in both short stories created narratives that illustrate the destructive impact of society's adherence to practices passed down from generation to generation. Lastly, the similarity to the dystopian theme through the presentation of a seemingly idealized society, but colored by morally reprehensible aspects, by depicting a society that makes human sacrifices to maintain happiness or order. In addition, The Lottery (1948) and The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas (1973) have different narrative approaches, both deeply exploring moral conflicts that arise from tradition and the existing social order. Within these themes, they also raise profound questions about human values and morality.
