Abstract

This research is concerned with the analysis of romance formula in the movie La La Land (2016) that directed by Damien Chazelle. The objectives of this research are 1) to determine the forms of the romance formula in the La La Land movie 2) To analyze the myth of La La Land movie construct the romance formula. This research uses Joyce G. Saricks' theory to analyze the romance formula and Northrop Frye's theory to analyze the myth of seasons. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The main data in this research is taken from the La La Land (2016) movie, while the secondary data is taken from the script in La La Land (2016) movie. The results of this study contain 6 elements that build romance formula, namely, (1) tone/mood that evokes the audience's emotions. (2) the characterization of Mia as a heroin, Sebastian as a hero, and the music entitled Mia and Sebastian's Theme characterizes the two main characters. (3) the story line in the movie shows the journey of Mia and Sebastian's relationship from stranger to someone who was once loved, as well as their success in achieving their dreams. (4) the set in the movie uses an iconic setting in Los Angeles. (5) the pacing in this movie combines fast pacing and slow pacing to keep the audience engaged. (6) the style/language in this movie shows a unique and easily identifiable characteristic that expresses romance. Myth of seasons is divided into 5, myth of Winter focuses on the ironic aspects of the two main characters lives. The myth of spring portrays the comedic and the emergence of love. The myth of summer depicts the romantic relationship that exists between the two main characters. The myth of the fall illustrates the conflict in the relationship. Finally, the next five years of winter's myth describes the irony of the relationship between the two characters. The myth of seasons revolves on the development of the relationship between the two characters, which significantly strengthens the construction of the romance formula in the film. Romance formula and myth of seasons underlie the story and make the La La Land (2016) movie belongs to the romance genre that evokes emotions.
