Abstract

Phonological changes refer to alterations or shifts in the sound system of a language over time. These modifications involve variations in the production, arrangement, and perception of speech sounds (phonemes) within a particular language or dialect. This research discusses how English pronunciation changes for Korean students who are not native English speakers. The research object taken was the YouTube channel of Seungbin, who is a high school student in Korea who always shares videos of his daily life at school with friends using English. This research purposes are to analyze how the articulation of spoken English words changes and then groups these changes into phonological processes including assimilation, dissimilation, epenthesis, deletion, and metathesis. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with observation techniques. The articulation analysis was carried out using the theory of April McMahon (2002), while the analysis of the phonological process used the theory of Elizabeth Zsiga (2013). Based on the results of research analysis, 53 sound change data were found in the form of English words and phrases. From this data, it is categorized into five phonological processes so that the total data is 58 phonological processes, namely: (a) assimilation are 25 data, (b) dissimilation are 6 data, (c) epenthesis are 12 data, (d) deletion are 10 data, and (e) metathesis are 5 data. Assimilation is the process most often mentioned by Korean students, namely changing phonemes with phonemes that sound similar. After analyzing all the data thoroughly, it is clear that the phonological process theory is quite useful in understanding changes in sounds over time.
