Abstract
Masculinity is the result of social construction influenced by the values, norms, and expectations prevailing in society. This research examines the hegemonic masculinity values of male characters in Little Women (2019) movie using Raewyn Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity. The objectives of this study are first, to analyze hegemonic masculinity that represented by the male characters in Little Women (2019) movie and second, to analyze the hegemonic construction of masculinity in Little Women movie compromised by character development. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques by listening and taking notes. The hegemonic masculinity represented by the male characters in Little Women (2019) movie is consistently show through their behavior, interactions, and relationships with other characters and their social environment. There are six male characters who portray different sides of hegemonic masculinity. Laurie, with his confident and ambitious attitude, shows control in social interactions and romantic relationships. Mr. Dashwood, as an authoritarian editor, shows his maturity in the world of work and asserts his position of masculinity. Father March, with his dedication to his family and resilience in difficult situations, reflects the male role as leader and protector of the family. John Brooke approves of patriarchal norms in education, while Friedrich Bhaer demonstrates politeness and a mentor role in guiding Jo as a writer. Mr. Laurence represents this by displaying his strength and authority, but also showing his sincerity and vulnerability that challenges traditional norms of masculinity. All of these characters provide a deeper understanding of how the norms of masculinity manifested in their daily lives at that time. The second research result regarding the hegemonic construction of masculinity in Little Women movie compromised by character development of the main character, Jo March gradually compromised by empathetic and emotionally vulnerable, challenging traditional norms and expectations. The main character experiences development regarding her views on the hegemonic construction of masculinity. In the beginning, she shows resistance to the norms of masculinity and social expectations of women, but in the end, she faces a compromise between dreams and reality in building her life.
