Abstract

Teaching English to Indonesian EFL young learners is still problematic. It is happens not only because English is not used in daily activities but also the lack of interest in learning English at the elementary school level. For this reason, this case study first aims to: 1) Find out the problems in teaching English to young learners and 2) find out the solutions to the problems in teaching English to young learners. This research employs a qualitative research method with a descriptive qualitative design. The researcher conducted interview to three English teachers in primary school. Observation and interview for English teachers use the theory of Bungin (2007). The participants of this research were three teachers from English teacher at SDN Limbangansari Cianjur. The finding shows that there are several problems that teachers faced during teaching and learning process at SDN Limbangansari Cianjur. the resulting data revealed five challenges: 1) Cognitive development 2) Motivation 3) Student attention 4) Multi-level group and 5) Assesment. In addition, the data revealed five principles used by the teacher 1) Establish positive relationship with students 2) Create a fun and enjoyable classroom environment 3) Assist and guide children in need 4) Children construct meaning actively and 5) Engage in collaborative language practice with their peers. Thus, this research describes the challenges ecountered by the teachers during teaching and learning process and the principles that the teachers used to solve the problems. Therefore, the principles used by the teachers can maximize the problems in teaching English to young learners. In addition, the result of this study can be used as a reference. Especially for the English teachers in primary school and future researcher.
