Abstract

ENGLISH : This research investigates the strategic use of wordplay in SOMETHINC's Instagram copywriting to engage and persuade their target customer on Instagram. Incorporating two foundational frameworks, Walter Nash's theory of wordplay and Roman Jakobson's communication model, the study aims to analyze both the type and function of wordplay found within SOMETHINC's Instagram posts. Methodologically, it adopts a descriptive qualitative approach supplemented by content analysis techniques to thoroughly investigate and interpret the data. Major findings reveal the prevalence of Pun-metaphors as the most frequently used wordplay technique, followed by Portmanteaus and Blends, among others. However, specialized forms like Pseudomorphs and Bilingual Puns are notably rare, likely due to their potential lack of resonance with the broader audience. Moreover, the analysis demonstrates a strong emphasis on the referential, emotive, and conative functions of wordplay, indicating a deliberate strategy to convey product information, express brand personality, and encourage audience engagement. While the Metalingual Function appears less frequently, the Poetic Function significantly enhances the aesthetic and expressive aspects of SOMETHINC's Instagram content, aligning it with the platform's visual nature and increasing its shareability. This research provides valuable insights into the intricate interplay between language, wordplay, and brand communication on social media platforms, offering implications for marketers aiming to craft compelling copywriting strategies.
