Abstract
One of the things that is innate and part of human nature is anxiety. It is the normal response of our body that prepares to face what it perceives as a danger. Speaking is the ability to utter articulated sounds or words to express thoughts, ideas, and feelings. As a means of communication, speaking not only conveys the speaker’s ideas to the listener, furthermore speaking is also done for various purposes, according to what the speaker needs to do in the conversation. The purpose of this research was to observe English speaking anxiety in members of the Society of English Students and Enthusiast at Islamic State University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. In particular, it attempted to identify the level of anxiety, the factors that influenced anxieties in speaking English based on members perspectives, and how to deal with such anxieties. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a case study approach. Fourteen members who felt anxious were chosen as participants. Data was collected through structured interviews and field observations. The results show that speaking in front of other members, lack of self-confidence, fear of forgetting vocabulary and grammatical errors, fear that other members will be laughed at, negative thoughts when speaking, and lack of preparation are factors that influence to the member's anxiety when speaking English. The results of analysis data show that many members are at the “mild anxiety” level and no member is at the “panic” level. There are seven members experiencing the level of “mild anxiety," four members experiencing the level of “moderate anxiety,” and three members experiencing the level of “severe anxiety." The researcher also offer suggestions several solutions that could be used to overcome members's anxiety: confidence, change the mindset, practice to improve members's English skills, and the last one is prepare well.
