Abstract

This research aims to reveal the phonological disorder experienced by Zack Gottsagen, who has Down Syndrome, and the type of his language disorder. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the subject of this study. The researcher analyzed it by using the theory of The American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (1993) with the theory of Carroll (2008). The result of this research, the researcher found phonological disorders committed by Gottsagen as much as 6 omission data, 4 distortion data, 2 addition data, and 9 substitution data. Of the many substitution errors that are often made is the replacement of labiodental-fricative sounds consisting of the sounds /f/ and /v/ into bilabial-plosive sounds in the sounds /p/ and /b/. From all the data that has been analyzed, Gottsagen experiences expressive language disorders because he has symptoms as in the theory of the American Psychiatric Association (1994) that individuals with Down Syndrome experience symptoms such as limited speech, weak vocabulary, difficulty expressing ideas, and slow language development. Gottsagen faces expressive language disorders in phonology due to unique anatomical features like facial and oral structures. Motor control constraints and coordination issues may hinder complex tongue and lip movements, leading to a slower speech development process. As a result, Gottsagen may require additional time and specialized support to learn certain sounds.
