Abstract

The global spread of English has resulted in its use as a native language in some countries and a foreign language in others. Japan is an example of a country where English is primarily encountered as a foreign language. However, due to several factors, not all Japanese citizens achieve complete mastery. One significant factor is the fundamental difference between the sound systems, or phonologies, of English and Japanese. These phonological differences are believed to influence the pronunciation of English by Japanese learners, resulting in deviations from native-like speech patterns. This study focuses on the phonological process that produced by Nogizaka46 member on NogiEigo New Year’s special episodes. There were three episodes analyzed in this study, New Year’s episode 07-01-2018, New Year’s episode 27-01-2019, New Year’s episode 26-01-2020. This study aimed to find (1) the words which are pronounced differently from phonological aspects (2) the patterns that revealed though different pronunciation by native speaker or Nogizaka46 members. This phonological process seems very simple, yet it has its own uniqueness. The pronunciation of words in the target language and the source language can change due to differences in the language inventory between the two. These changes are an interesting process to study because each process does not happen randomly, but is influenced by several rules. One of the rules that influences this process, especially in the study of English loanwords into Japanese, is the rule that requires a consonant (C) to be followed by one of the vowels (V). These phonological changes show that language is not a static system, but rather a dynamic and constantly evolving one. Understanding this phonological process is important for linguists, language teachers, and language learners to understand how language works and how languages influence each other.
