Abstract

Language style is a method used by someone to communicate using language that suits conversation. Language style can be influenced by several factors including the participant's gender characteristics. The aim of this research is to analyze types of language styles and gender characteristics as a factor in the use of language styles in Vice News talk shows entitled "Three Years of Vice News Tonight". The theory used in this research is the theory put forward by Martin Joo for the first problem formulation, and Lakoff's theory for the second problem formulation. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. Previous research showed that there were several differences in the use of language styles between men and women, indicating that men tend to use a language style that is assertive and direct, while women tend to use an indirect language style. As a result, researcher found that both types of language styles or gender characteristics as a factor in the use of language styles can be influenced and adjusted according to many factors, such as the topic and conditions when someone uses that language style. Thus, the use of language styles in men or women cannot be determined forever in accordance with applicable theory due to social expectations or other factors that determine the use of language styles and interest to be able to develop periodically.
