Abstract

This undergraduate thesis has a research background is their utilizing a smartphone, frequently conversing in an abrasive way and calling each other by bad words of animal names and adult-sounding nicknames. But seemed to bring them closer. But someday their getting into a physical fight and their mothers too, but there still on be best friends. And examines the impact of smartphone usage on early adolescent interactions with peers, addressing the questions of how early adolescents use smartphones and what the impacts of smartphone usage are on their interactions with peers. The aim of this undergraduate thesis was to ascertain what they use smartphones for and how it affects their interactions with peers and parents. The theoretical framework employed in this study was George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory, focusing on how media can influence individuals who consume it. A qualitative descriptive method was utilized, with data collection techniques including observation and interviews. Data analysis was conducted using the narrative analysis method and three data analysis threads, according to Miles and Huberman: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this research indicated that early adolescents use smartphones for educational, entertainment, communication, and pornography purposes, which have both positive and negative impacts depending on how they are used. There were positive and negative impacts on friendship, emotional well-being, early adolescent relationships, and parent-child relationships. The analysis of the findings confirmed George Gerbner's cultivation theory, demonstrating that smartphone usage influenced real-life experiences as per the content consumed and activities carried out on the devices. Thus, these research results confirm George Gerbner's cultivation theory, provided evidence of changes in interaction and communication patterns following smartphone usage with peers and parents.
