Abstract

Technological advances and the development of capitalism have transformed people's lives, including the emergence of many socio-economic, socio-cultural, and psychological phenomena. Music is no exception. Music can carry critical narratives and reflect conditions in society. However, music is often seen as value-free, while popular music with developments in recording technology is a product of the cultural industry. This research analyzes three Blur albums; Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, and The Great Escape, using a literary sociology approach, Baudrillard's simulacra theory, Seeman's social alienation, and Adorno's popular music theory. Researchers try to find reflections and narratives depicted in the lyrics according to the topic of hyperreality, its causes, and its impact on social alienation. Apart from that, the researcher dissected the musical structure to answer the contradictions contained in Blur's music and lyrics. This research data was taken through lyrics and musical structures that have been curated according to the topic. This research uses content analysis and qualitative descriptive methods. Researchers found that there were critical narratives and phenomena in 9 song lyrics that recorded hyperreality, and 27 song lyrics that described the causes. Apart from that, 43 songs show the influence of hyperreality on social alienation. Researchers also found contradictions in the lyrics and songs based on the substructure and superstructure contained in 11 songs, as well as standardization and pseudo-individualization in 3 songs. Thus, it concluded that Blur's three albums reflect social conditions in a biased way because there are indications that the music and lyrics have been commodified.
