Abstract

An illocutionary act refers to the intention or purpose behind a speech act, in which the speaker aims to perform a specific action through their utterance, such as making a request, giving a command, expressing an opinion, or asking a question. It is about the speaker's intended effect on the listener beyond the literal meaning of the words spoken. The analysis focuses on understanding how illocutionary acts contribute to themes of the narrative. By examining the nuances of parent-child interactions through illocutionary acts, this research aims to provide insights into the portrayal of family dynamics and communication patterns in contemporary cinematic storytelling in signifying from the illocutionary act types and its function. This research used theories from Yule (1966) and Searle (1976). The study employed a qualitative descriptive analysis approach to identify and analyze the quality understanding about illocutionary acts in selected utterances among parents and elderly from the father, mother, aunt, grandfather and grandmother and children character, namely Kamala, as the protagonist of woman superhero in the movie. From the analysis, there were 261 illocutionary acts expressed within the detail of 73 representative acts, 71 directive acts, 51 expressive acts, 55 declarative acts, and 11 commissive acts. Based on the results, the highest was in the representative type and the lowest was in the commissive type. Finally, it caused the quality of certain area understanding result, where the illocutionary act types existed, and function served in conveying within the narrative about the struggle of Kamala as the superhero with the context of Pakistani family bond, shame, honour, colonialism, immigrant, and the will to approve herself as worth to help people and the parent acceptance as the superhero. It started in the narrative by deploying among parent and child within the earlier narrative with the nuance of illocutionary act directive (command, warning, prohibition) and expressive feeling into expressive (feeling) and commissive (commitment).
