Abstract

English is one of subjects that should be taken in junior high school. In mastering the English, the students need to learn listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One of the important aspects of learning any language is mastering vocabulary. If students learn a new language without mastering the vocabulary, they would be difficult to understand that language. This study is aimed to determine 1) the student’s vocabulary mastery with using the Duolingo application, 2) the student’s vocabulary mastery with using the PowerPoint 3) the significant difference between the student’s vocabulary mastery with and without using the Duolingo application. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design using two classes, experimental and control classes. The researcher conducted this research in MTs. Salafiyah Al-Mushlihin and the participants were taken from two classes of eighth-grade students in the academic year 2023/2024. Based on the findings, the results show that the mean value of the experimental class is 71.09, while the mean of the control class is 47.42. The calculation of the table of independent t-tests revealed that the Significance of Levene’s Test for Equality of Variance is 0.329 0.05. The data variance between the post-test experimental and control classes was homogenous. Another result from the independent sample t-test, known as the Significance (2-tailed), is 0.000. It is lower than 0.05. It indicates that H0 is rejected, and Ha is accepted. The result of the study show that using the Duolingo application as learning media can be used to improve the vocabulary mastery of Eighth-grade students of MTs Salafiyah Al-Mushlihin. It is suggested that English teachers use mobile learning media especially Duolingo, to improve students'' vocabulary mastery.
