Abstract
This study examines the use of assertive speech acts between speakers and interlocutors in podcast shows, and the selected podcast show is the Piers Morgan podcast Episode: Full Talk Cristiano Ronaldo With Piers Morgan. This research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze utterances containing assertive speech acts taken from the podcast as the data, specifically based on the theory of Searle & Vanderveken (1985) regarding the types of assertive speech act and based on the theory of Searle (1969) regarding their functions. This study found nine types as well as functions of the assertive speech acts, which consist of: stating, informing, praising, claiming, denying, admitting, reporting, arguing, and suggesting. In this study, 93 data of assertive speech act types were found with stating being the most dominant with 26 data. The reason why stating is the most data found is because in this podcast Cristiano reveals and discusses many things that state about his own situation after returning to Manchester United, stating the situation of his family who was hit by a disaster after losing his son, the situation of Cristiano's tension with the coach (Eric Ten Hag) which has not improved, rumors of his move to Saudi Arabia, and many more. As for the least data found in this study, namely reporting with 3 data. The reason for this is because this podcast does not discuss or reveal much talk related to reporting either from Piers Morgan or from Cristiano Ronaldo during the podcast.
