Abstract
This research aims to investigate the kinds and functions of social deixis in Oprah Winfrey's interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on talk show CBS Morning. In the interview, there are expressions that use terms or coding that refer to someone and some other objects. According to linguists, the expression or reference word known as deixis, one of the branches of deixis is social deixis. Social deixis is a reference expressed in the form of words or phrases related to the difference in social status between the speaker, listener and speech partner. To avoid misunderstanding in interpreting the reference expression. Then deixis is needed. Therefore, the researcher formulated two research questions: 1) What are the kinds of social deixis found in the Oprah Winfrey's interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry? 2) What are the function of social deixis found in the Oprah Winfrey's interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry?. To find out these results, this research uses the theory of social deixis by Levinson (1983) and Cruse's theory (2006). The method of this research is qualitative method. The data of this research, were identified and recorded in the data table. The expressions identified as social deixis recorded in the data set to be analyzed, classified, interpreted and concluded. The results of the data analysis of this research show that there are 78 data categorized as social deixis, which divided into two kinds of social deixis, namely relational and absolute. There are 69 data relational social deixis, consisting of 56 data as speaker and referent (referent honorific), there was no data as the speaker and addressee (addressee honorific), 11 data as speaker and bystander (bystander honorific), and 2 data as speaker and setting (formality level). There were 9 data including absolute social deixis, consisting of 3 data as authorized speaker and 6 data as authorized recipient. Based on the data analysis, the most dominant kinds of social deixis is the relational kind of social deixis. It can be assumed that the context in the interview related to honorific greeting and relationships that discuss issues of personal and interpersonal relationships between Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, members of the Royal Family and other object being discussed in interview. The least used kinds of social deixis is the absolute of social deixis. It can be assumed that the use of absolute social deixis are not the main focus, because the main focus of the interview was discuss personal experiences and social relationships. In addition, there are 4 functions of social deixis found, consisting of 28 data categorized as social status differentiation function of social deixis, 4 data categorized as Politeness function of social deixis, 12 data categorized as Social identity function of social deixis, and 34 data categorized as Closeness relationship function of social deixis. 28 data to show social status distinction, 4 data to show politeness, 12 data to show social identity, and 34 data to show relationship closeness. Based on the data in analysis, the most dominant function of social deixis is the function of social deixis as a closeness relationship. It can be assumed that the context in the interview is related to the closeness relationship between Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, members of the royal family and Meghan's family members and other individuals being discussed in interview. The least used social deixis function is the social deixis politeness function. It can be assumed that the main focus of the interview was discussing sensitive life experiences, which resulted in emotionally critical speech.
