Abstract
This study aims to examine the linguistic landscape that exists on Braga street, Bandung. There are two formulations of problems in this study, namely: (1) How are the languages displayed on shop signs in Braga street Bandung; (2) How are the characteristics of languages on shop signs in Braga street Bandung. This study focuses on examining the languages used and the characteristics of bilingual and multilingual signs. This study used theories from Landry & Bourhis (1997) to identify signs, theories from Cenoz & Gorter (2006) to identify bilingual and multilingual sign characteristics and functions of signs. This research used a qualitative approach in collecting data, classifying and analyzing data. The total data used in this study was as many as 150 signs. The results of this study show that in each store on Braga street, there is the use of monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual. The author found that there are 17 languages spoken on Jalan Braga, namely: Indonesian, English, Javanese, Sundanese, Buginese, Italian, Korean, Arabic, Greek, Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Dutch, German, and Latin. Then, in the characteristics that use bilingual and multilingual signs, there are five markers, namely the first language on the sign, text size, text font, amount of information and translation. The most widely used languages on shop signs on Braga street are Indonesian and English because Indonesian is the national language, while English is an international language. Furthermore, shop owners choose both languages on their shop signs. This research is expected to provide insight, motivation and reference for future readers and researchers who want to study similar topics, especially about the linguistic landscape.
