Abstract

Conversation is a communication process that involves two or more participants. However, a specific utterance does not always result in an anticipated response, it is commonly happened because of the difference in the conversation’s goal between speakers. This phenomenon can be found in The Neighbors’ Window short movie’s conversation. The research objectives are (1) To analyze the type of adjacency pairs occurred in The Neighbors’ Window short movie. (2) To identify the pair’s response in The Neighbors’ Window short movie’s conversation. This research used qualitative method with descriptive approach,the data obtained from conversation in the movie, then transcribed in written form and analyzed by using theory of adjacency pairs by Yule. From the findings, 39 data were analyzed and 8 types of adjacency pair found. The “question” type used frequently in the movie, which appeared 16 times. Then, it was followed by “assertion” which appeared 11 times. “Assessment” appeared 5 times and “greeting” appeared three times, putting it in third and fourth place respectively. There was “offer”, “command”, “summons” and “announcement” appeared just once. 24 preferred response and 15 dispreferred response were also found. 24 preferred responses mainly occurred from the “question-answer” type. While 15 dispreferred responses occurred because the conflicts that happened throughout the movie.
